Hello World,

So, I posted last week about future and working military applications of Augmented Reality(AR).  This week I wanted to address some of the current applications of AR.  There are many advertisements, shopping, and sporting events which use AR, but what about health and beauty.  Have you ever seen a hairstyle, facial hair style or make-up choice that you wondered how you would look with that choice.  Just pick up your phone and go to the application store.  I found a free hairstyle and facial hair application to give you an example.  Granted the free ones are not as good as the paid versions, but it gives you an idea of how AR can help you make life choices today!

Without AR

This is a simple application, but you can see how AR let me see what I would look like with different hairstyles and facial hair.  There are several applications for clothing and makeup too.  One makeup application allowed the user to take a picture of someone with a makeup style they liked and guided them through the application process until their makeup was the same style.  Can you think of similar applications?

  1. Chuck,

The only other app I can think of at the moment is an app where you take your picture and then it turns that picture into an animation. The apps you are talking about are more practical, however I'm sure there are ways that different people could use the animator one to their advantage as well. I think all of these types of apps are very cool, and could make a lot of peoples lives easier.

  2. Chuck,

What an interesting post to your blog, I opened it and immediately began laughing seeing your hair like that. The goatee I think goes well with your academic presence. There are literally thousands of apps on our phones to create pictures with different hairstyles and facial hair. Most common of course is snapchat that uses your camera's phone and different settings to provide various pictures. I will have to try some of these augmented reality applications out, if anything to spend time goofing off instead of focusing on school work. Thanks for the share.

    1. Tony,

Thanks for the reply. You are certainly right about the amount of applications trying to use AR. I wonder what your future hairstyle will be? Thanks again.

  3. Chuck,

Thanks for your post! What you mention reminds me of a game called Pokemon Go, which is quite popular. It is the AR technology that makes this game more interactive and attractive since you can see a living pokemon in your surroundings.

  4. Chuck,

Great post! I enjoyed the photo of your new hair style and goatee along with the use of the application to see what you would look like if you where to choose that style...pretty cool actually. So as I did a couple of searches I found an application for golf...a game that I really enjoy. The AR is used in-conjunction with GPS and gives the player a 360-degree view of the layout of the course. For a player this is huge as it gives them a chance to pick the most advantageous target for their next shot. Strategic play

    1. Erric,

Thanks for the reply. I am using the hairstyle application to pick my post-Army style. This one probably will not make the cut, lol. The golf application sounds really cool. If they put a tracker in the ball it would be even better.

  5. Chuck,

That's an awesome post man. I appreciate you doing this blog and educating me on the benefits of AR- not just for the military, but also for umm new haircuts and facial hair styles. I think it goes well with your soon to be new profession. Like Tony, I do agree there are a ton of AR applications. I will continue to visit your blog for more information and start searching for AR applications and share some with you at a later date.

  6. Chuck,
Interesting post, I have not seen that type of AR app but I'm not surprised, anything that will generate revenue is obviously going to be the subject of new technology. Pretty creative to be honest, in the not too distant future I believe pretty much all businesses will have AR features built into their websites, seems like a great way to advertise. thanks, looking forward to reading more of your posts.

  7. Chuck,

Great post! I actually had an app on my phone like this but, its for glasses! It allowed me to try them on virtually to see which pair I wanted!

    Thanks for sharing!
